FC Screw Selection

Fibre cement punishes the wrong fastener — cracked board, stripped frames, rust stains through paint. Here's how to spec FC screws properly.

What FC screws are

Fibre cement — Villaboard, Scyon, BGC sheet and the rest — is a hard, brittle board. It doesn't compress the way timber or plasterboard does, so a general-purpose screw either cracks it, sits proud, or blows out the back face. FC screws are purpose-made for the material: a countersunk head with ribs or nibs under it that cut a neat recess as the screw seats, a thread designed to hold in the frame rather than in the sheet, and a point matched to the substrate behind the board.

The head finishing flush without cracking the surrounding board is the whole game — it's what lets the joint get stopped, sealed and painted cleanly. Wafer-head variants are used where the fixing lands on a batten or where a broader bearing face suits the detail.

When it applies on the Sunshine Coast

FC cladding, eaves linings, and wet-area sheeting are everywhere in Coast building — new builds and the steady run of renovation work alike. Almost all of it is exterior or semi-exposed, and almost all of it is inside AS 3566 Class 3 territory or worse. That drives the coating call: Class 4 coated FC screws are the standard spec for exterior work here, with stainless the step up for beachfront and direct marine sites — Mooloolaba, Kings Beach, Caloundra, Noosa Heads, Coolum, Marcoola and the like.

An underspecced FC fixing announces itself: rust spots bleeding through the paint film at every screw position. By the time you can see it, the fix is patch-and-repaint at best.

How to choose

  • Frame first. Timber frame takes a coarse-thread FC screw with a sharp point; steel frame takes a fine-thread, self-drilling FC screw rated for the steel gauge you're fixing to. They are not interchangeable.
  • Length to suit board plus frame. The screw needs full engagement in the frame behind the sheet — board thickness plus proper penetration into the stud or batten. Don't make the sheet carry the load.
  • Coating class for the zone. Class 4 for exterior coastal work as the default; stainless where the site is in the direct marine band. See the corrosion class guide for the zone rules.
  • Follow the sheet manufacturer's fixing specification. Edge distances, fastener centres, and minimum penetration are published by the board manufacturer for each product and application. Those documents govern the installation — work to them.
  • Dense or compressed sheet: heavier compressed FC products have their own fixing requirements, often including pre-drilling and countersinking. Check the product's literature before pulling the trigger.

Common mistakes

  • General-purpose screws in FC. Chipboard and timber screws crack the board face or leave heads proud. The board is unforgiving; the screw has to do the accommodating.
  • Overdriving. Sinking the head past flush crushes the board around it and strips the thread's grip in the frame — the fixing looks done but holds nothing. Set the driver's clutch and drive to flush, not past it.
  • Fixing too close to edges and corners. That's where brittle board breaks out. Respect the manufacturer's minimum edge distances.
  • Zinc plated coastal fixings. Zinc plated FC screws are an interior product. Outside on the Coast, they'll stain the cladding within a season or two.
  • Timber-thread screws into steel frame. They may bite, but engagement in thin steel is poor and the fixing works loose. Match the thread to the frame.
