What the two classes mean
Under AS 3566 — the Australian Standard for self-drilling screws in building construction — the class rating describes how well a screw's protective coating resists corrosion. Class 3 is rated for moderate exterior environments: coastal residential work in the band roughly 1–10km back from the surf. Class 4 is rated for severe exposure: direct marine environments within about a kilometre of breaking surf, and industrial atmospheres.
The practical difference is the coating system. A Class 4 screw carries a heavier, more durable protective build than a Class 3 screw, so it survives longer where salt is constantly in the air. Same screw geometry, same drive, same structural job — different lifespan once the weather gets at it.
Where each applies on the Sunshine Coast
The dividing line is distance to the surf, then local exposure on top of it.
- Class 4 territory (within ~1km of the surf): Mooloolaba beachfront, Kings Beach, Caloundra, Noosa Heads, Coolum Beach, Mudjimba, Marcoola, Twin Waters. Class 4 is the minimum here, and stainless is worth serious consideration for exposed fixings.
- Class 3 territory (roughly 1–10km): most of Maroochydore, Buderim, Sippy Downs, Caloundra West, Pelican Waters. Class 3 is the minimum.
- Inland (10km+): Nambour, Maleny, Montville, Palmwoods, Landsborough. Class 3 remains the safe default — the cost difference over a job is small and it removes the argument.
Distance isn't the whole story. Estuaries, canal frontage and tidal reaches create microclimates that punch above their distance — a house on the Maroochy River can see worse salt exposure than one further from the water as the crow flies. When the site is near salt water of any kind, treat it as a step harsher than the map suggests.
How to make the call
- Start with distance. Under 1km to surf: Class 4 minimum. Under 10km: Class 3 minimum. Those are the floor, not the target.
- Then rate the exposure. A fixing that's rain-washed and ventilated fares better than one in a sheltered spot where salt settles and never rinses off. Sheltered, unwashed detail work near the coast is where stepping up from Class 3 to Class 4 pays for itself.
- Match the material you're fixing. Roofing and cladding manufacturers publish fastener requirements for their sheeting — the fastener should meet or exceed what the sheet manufacturer calls for, or the fixing becomes the weak point of the system.
- Check the metal pairing. Class rating covers coating durability, not galvanic compatibility. Dissimilar metals in contact need their own check — see the galvanic corrosion guide.
- When it's marginal, step up. The price gap between Class 3 and Class 4 is trivial against the cost of replacing corroded fixings on a finished job.
Common mistakes
- Buying on price at the front line. Class 3 screws on a beachfront roof will corrode ahead of the sheeting. The saving is gone the first time a head seizes or streaks rust.
- Assuming "galvanised" means rated. The class rating is the spec, not the word on the box. Ask for the class, not the coating name.
- Ignoring cut points and damage. Overdriving a screw or burring the head damages the coating the rating depends on. Drive to seat, not to crush.
- One spec for every elevation. The exposed south-east face cops the salt-laden weather; a protected courtyard doesn't. Spec the worst exposure or split the spec deliberately.
